What can be done for my dachshund who has a broken tail?

A broken tail will generally heal on its own, though it may be painful and most definantly it will be deformed. If the break is completely through the bone the best thing to do is probably take him to the vet and have it docked.

Your vet should be able to remove the tail with little problem or issue. There will be a small nub left where his/her tail used to be. This is a fairly simply surgery and should not cost a lot.

You can attempt to have the tail set by a vet, or you can just ride it out. They don't need their tails, so even if it heals crooked they will be fine.

Typically broken tails will heal on their own. The vet will usually place an Elizabethian Collar (the cone shaped one) around the dog's neck to keep him from bothering it. In extreme cases, they may need to ampuate the tail. This really has no detrimental affect other than cosmetic.
