A good start would be to visit your family doctor who then may refer you to a neurology specialist to do a nerve conduction test on your hand to find out where the numbness is coming from. If it is something minor an occupational therapist or simple surgery can help.

Thumb numbness can be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. Thumb nerves pass through a narrow area in the wrist and swelling here can cause numbness. Surgery can help relieve it.

You need to find out why your thumb is numb. Localized numbness can result from strain or injury, but it can also be an early indicator of a neurological problem. Please seek the advice of a qualified physician.

Thumb numbness, and any numbness in the extremities, can be a caused by a number of ailments and should be diagnosed by a doctor. A possible fix would be to wear a wrist brace to sleep as an awkward wrist position in sleep can cause poor circulation or pinching of a nerve. Chiropractors can also be helpful in eliminating numbness.
