I do not recommend cleaning the gun by yourself. Some gun shops and gun smiths offer a rust removal service. They can remove the rust either with a chemical solution or by a process known as "bluing".

Unload your gun. Double check that it is unloaded. Apply oil to the rust spots on the gun. Using a steel wool gently rub the area. Wipe away oil with a cloth or rag. Repeat if necessary. Don't just use any oil, you must use gun oil. Make sure it is a good brand.

Just clean the rust by using alcohol and I mean the rubbing alcohol. It works very well to remove the stains.
