Babies should be strong enough to hold their heads up. Color perception, as well as visual and oral exploration are beginning. A sleeping pattern and solid cereals are established.

There are tons of books on this subject, the best I think is What To Expect The First Year. At five months, he should make sounds, follow you with his eyes, begin to push up, like certain toys, find his fingers and suck on them, and find his toes at times.

Infant development varies widely, so don't be concerned if your child isn't exactly following developmental guidelines. Most babies at this age can roll from their tummy to their backs and sit with support. They are interested in playing with toys as well as smiling at others and making babbling sounds. They are also usually ready for their first foods.
