Like cars, riding mowers have a drive belt that primarily keeps the engine turning. Look up your particular mower brand and find where the belt is located.

It may not be a belt. Most often, self propelled lawn mowers use gears to propel itself. More than likely a gear fell off or stripped out.

Depending on the Mower it may not even have a belt. However, if it does indeed have a belt driven propulsion unit, the belt will be located above the blade on the output shaft of the engine. It will normally be covered by a plate so it is separate from the cutting area.
