There are different types of schizophrenia, but most are characterized by having delusions, hallucinations, and hearing voices. The last symptom is one reason people get it mixed up with MPD, as they equate hearing voices in your head with having different personalities, which is incorrect.

Schizophrenia has several clusters of symptoms of which you need to show the majority. Flat or inappropriate affect is one type of symptom. Difficulty with verbal speaking or disorganized thoughts are another. Hallucinations and or delusions are also possible. MPD also shares delusional states, but is otherwise very different.
