Of course one obvious sign is severe weight loss. The person looks sick; the facial skin is usually pale and the cheeks are sunken. Hair from the head may come out in big clumps. If they're being starved they probably also look raggedy from neglect.

The symptoms are different is it is a caloric malnutrition or a proteic malnutrition, even a mix. For caloric one symptoms are low weight, loss or muscular mass, irritability, dry skin, flaccid arms and legs and normal hair and there is not edema .For proteic malnutrition they are: low weight, apathy or sadness, brittle hair, more abdominal volume and edema.

Not getting enough iron, protein in daily diet or not being able to hold food down, lack of energy, poor body movement coordination and intestinal problems are the noticeable signs.

Skinniness (obviously), sunken eyes, muscle wasting, trouble paying attention, learning disabilities. Call child protective services. Or maybe you can talk to her or take her a cake or something. Give her kids cookies.
