In leukemia, there are many different variations of the cancer. In order to know what stages there are in leukemia, you first must know which leukemia you friend is diagnosed with. In general, there are two different stages- there is the chronic leukemia, which is a slow progression, and then there is acute leukemia, which is afast progression of cancer

Leukemia is staged based on the type of leukemia, the cells affected, and the symptoms present. For example, Stage 1 Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia is when less than 10% of blood and bone marrow are blasts (immature cells) with mild symptoms and a good response to treatment. Generally, the higher the stage the worse the prognosis.

Leukemia staging is different from other cancer staging. Cancer is staged by size of tumor, leukemia is normally staged by amount of certain blood cells and platelets and the particular type of leukemia that is involved. Also if the leukemia is acute or chronic will have different stages.
