The reason is that people today prefer to sit in the comfort of a theater than in their car. Car construction today make it difficult to see from the backseat. You have to listen to the audio on the radio meaning you have to leave your battery or car on.

Basically driven-ins were killed by personal video cassette players and traditional movie theaters. There were great for warmer climates but short seasons and loss of interest made them less profitable causing most to shut down. However there may possible be a few still open today.
