You may think you are old enough at 9 to stay home alone, but the law does not agree, for your own safety you must be atleast 12 years old to stay home alone. If you are left home alone a 9, you parents could face serious criminal charges and you could be placed elsewhere

12 yrs old seems to be the accepted rule of thumb, however this varies according to age and how long. You need to check with your local Department of Human Services, or your local police/sheriff dept as this can vary according to local statute. They are concerned with safety of the child, above all. Many schools have free aftercare programs.

Leaving a nine-year-old alone at home could easily be considered "child endangerment. It's great that you feel prepared to be left alone, but it's not a good idea.

Legally, New York doesn't have a law that states how old a child must be in order to stay home alone. Though, it does require that you know how to handle an emergency. As well as you must feel safe when being home alone and be in a safe environment. The most common guidelines for other states is 12.
