I was recently in Rhode Island, and the two places I liked the best were Newport and Providence. Newport is famous for the extravagant mansions built by the wealthy in the late 1800's. Providence is the home of Brown University and RISD, and it is a funky college town.

Newport is a must-see, both because of the town's spectacular location on the ocean and because of the city's mansions. The Breakers and Belcourt Castle are especially worthwhile.

It depends very much on your priorities. For such a tiny state, there's plenty to do, including gorgeous beaches, beautiful farmlands, hunting, fishing, wildlife, amusement parks, historical sites, museums and more. Check out the VisitRhodeIsland website for travel tips and ideas.

You must visit the Bay Islands in Jamestown, and Newport. Newport is right on the bay, with beautiful summertime views, and a variety of restaurants right on the water. Bay Islands are a small chain of islands with lots of activites for boaters and fishermen. Beautiful clean beaches as well!

Newport contains several "must see" sites. Newport is home to many historical mansions of the Vanderbilts, Astors and other gilded era families. Newport also has a public Cliff Walk by these homes. Providence's must see sights include the zoo, capital building, and fire walk along the Providence River.

You should visit their major city of Providence. You can walk around Brown University, a beautiful Ivy League school, and Rhode Island School of Design, one of the best art schools in the country. You must ride the Providence-Newport ferry, which will take you along the waterside. You should also go to the boutique beach Gooseberry.
