Symbols are often used in literature as they can both guide the plot and intrigue the readers. Some of the most common literary symbols include fire, gardens and water. Fire can represent truth. A garden can parallel the garden of eden in the bible and represent lost innocence. Water can represent youth (i.e. fountain of youth) or a spiritual source.
