To be independent means that you have the means to support yourself with regard to suitable housing, utilities, transportation, food, medical care, etc. At the age of 14, it is unlikely, unless you have a huge trust or seven figure income plus a manager, that the court would approve a petition for emancipation.

You will have to go before a judge and provide evidence that you have the means both intellectually and financially to take care of yourself. You will need to have a stable place to live and you need to have a plan to balance work and school.

Emancipation laws vary by state and some states have no emancipation laws. If a minor leaves home at 17 and no foul play is suspected, authorities may take a report but do little else. No state allows emancipation of a 14-year-old and if your parent encourages that course of action, they can and probably will be charged with child abandonment.

You will have to go before a judge to be granted emancipation as a minor. You will need to justify why you are seeking emancipation as well as prove self-reliance.
