There are several hallmarks that when coupled together form punk rock. These are representative in the music and in the lifestyle. Hallmarks of the music include fast, aggressive riffs, repetition, and social or politically charged lyrics. Lifestyle includes anti-establishment attitude, individualism, confrontation and questioning almost everything. It is a subculture that relies on both the music and the lifestyle.

Punk music is related to alternative music and heavy metal, but it carries with it a philosophy of attitude or meaning being more important than a perfect performance. Great punk rock bands are loud and emotional, and often carry a political message. Songs are short and fast with few guitar solos.

Punk started in the late 1970s as a reaction against disco music. It's lyrics had to do with social injustice, policital issues, and was tradmarked by a heavier sound, electric guitars, and "screaming vocals." Punk spoke to a generation of kids and yound adults who were dissatisfied with the status quo. Conteporary punk is not always so easy to distinguish.
