Births increase the size of a population, while deaths diminish it. Immigrations increases population size; emigration decreases it. Secondary to these causes are widespread disease, famine, war, genocide, natural disasters and environmental factors.

The birth rate, mortality rate, immigration rate and emigration rate are the four factors that produce changes in population size. As the birth rate and immigration rate increases, the population increases; whereas as the mortality rate and emigration rate increases the population declines.
