Cobalt has several uses, including lithium ion batteries, as a catalysis, and as a colotant. It can also be used in electroplating because of it's resistance to oxidation. The coloring is used in rediotherphy, and in the sterilization of medical supplies and waste. The blue color is distinctive, hence the name cobalt blue.
