There are two main companies who produce processors- Intel and AMD. These are then available with different numbers of cores, and different 'clockspeed'. In general, you should be looking for the highest number of cores and clockspeed possible within your budget.

One category of processor is architecture, which specifies the instruction set the processor has. In this category, types include x86(Intel compatible), ARM and PowerPC. Each of these have their advantages.
