Windows is the most popular. The current varieties are XP, Vista, and 7. Next is MacOS, which only runs easily on Apple hardware. It is easier to use than windows, but less configurable. Last is Linux/Unix. These are more difficult to use, but the user may reprogram the entire system.

I'll group them by company. First is Windows. This is the most popular, with around 85% of the market share. It's operating systems include XP, Vista, and Win7. Second place is Mac. Last is Linux - the only free operating system. Linux's operating systems include Ubuntu and OpenSuse.

You have two main types of operating systems for personal computers - Windows based and Linux/Unix based. Windows based are those created by Microsoft. Linux is open source, it is open for anyone to use and change, there are too many flavors to mention.
