A conflict theory of poverty is that a capitalist society exploits the poor only to reap the benefits for themselves.

Conflict theories state that there is a constant struggle for power between different social groups. If you're looking at poverty, this would mean that the lower classes are being oppressed by the upper class. The upper class wants to keep the lower class down because it benefits them: for example, the lower class provides the upper class with cheap labor.
