Make sure you are lifting a lot of weights (heavy with lots of reps, and ensure all body parts are being utilized once a week). Make sure you do a lot of cardio, and your diet should consist of a lot of protein and carbs, and a healthy amount at each meal.

I recommend weight intensive work outs, like abs on the ball. Some fitness centers offer a "basic training" that is similar to the army program. Tae bo is good as well.
