I think depending on the terrain you would be driving, you can choose your car. If its regular road and highways, I would recommend you take a sedan or a hatchback. If its a rough and rugged terrain, I suggest you take one of the off-roaders. Hope my suggestions help you.

Gas wise, small compact but comfort wise it's a poor choice. Amazingly older, insanely comfortable cars such as 89' Oldsmobile's get decent gas millage with about 27 mpg highway. With a cross country trip you have to take into consideration that you will be driving ALOT. You need a car that wont hurt you in the long run.

The best vehicle for a long road trip is the one that is comfortable for you. It should have a very good lumbar support and the seat should adjust to fit your heighth. You also need to decide if you want a quiet ride or do you want the excitement of a convertible.

What vehicle you select to drive across country depends on your needs. If you want cheap and small and don't care much about storage, then a small economy car like a Toyota or Honda will do the trick. If you need storage, then I recommend an enclosed vehicle like an SUV or van like a Chevy Tahoe or Venture.
