What are the best digital cameras on the market that are under $300.00?

I need a camera that will be durable and could be dropped, it is for a preteen.

The Olympus Stylus Tough retails for around $280 at Best Buy, and is still a high quality camera that produces great images.

The Cannon Alph is a rather good camera under $300. An other one is the Fuji S1000fd. I own that one, and it's excellent. The apertures are amazing, the zoom is phenomenal and easy to access. I bought my 10 megapixel camera for about $150. Now, the question is... Is it still sold in stores? That, I do not know.

I would recommend either the Canon Powershot SD960 ($196) or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 ($249) I have heard good things about both.

Camera models change frequently. Consider one with an automatic lens cover that's easy to hold steady. Models under under $200 take great photos and cost less to replace if lost.

The best digital cameras for pre-teens are probably the Holga. The Holga series of cameras come in both digial and film formats, are made of hard, durable plastic and create some outstanding photos. This camera specifically is used in a photographic form called Lomography which is appealing to younger photographers because of the unpredictability of the final product.
