The objective is to build trust and cooperation among team members. This theoretically reduces competition, gossip, back stabbing and knowledge with-holding. However, done wrong, and it becomes a hassle that causes employees to feel burdened or distrustful of management.

For a team-building exercise to work, management has the responsibility of encouraging participation. Part of the motivational role is to convey the specific individual and team benefits of each exercise.
