Permanent retainers are widely used today to help prevent the shifting of teeth after orthodontic treatment. Keeping teeth straight helps keep them cleaner and therefore healthier. Most kids will not remember to wear a removable retainer, or will lose it.

Many kids do not like putting in retainers because of the fact they they often cause speech problems such as talking with a lisp. After not wearing them for a while, retainers can cause slight pain and discomfort because teeth shift quickly.

The number one advantage is that your child will not lose the retainer. When I had a removable retainer, I can not tell you how many times I had to go back to the restaurant to pick it up. I even had to dig in the garbage a couple of times. Plus, you will have to pay for a replacement.

Permanent retainers for children are a good choice because of cost and efficacy considerations. Permanent retainers cannot be lost and so do not require frequent replacement. Children also tend to forget to wear a removable retainer at night, which reduces the benefit of the orthodontic treatment.
