Do you want to fit the train in your basement or backyard? Gauge depends on the distance between the two rails of the tracks, and some common gauges for small sets are O, N, HO, and Z. O is biggest, N is smallest. A good, common outdoor gauge is G.

There are countless models and track configurations. Consult an almanac for the period or invest in a theoretical gauge guide that will give gauge illustrations and dimensions for countless combinations.

Standard Gauge page. According to this page, and other's I've since found, Standard Gauge was 2. 125 inches. However, there appear to have been some manufacturers who made comparable trains at 2. 25 inch gauge. These were called "Wide Gauge".
