Someone takes openly displayed possession of the owner's land without permission. The squatter must use the land as if his own. Depending on the state the squatter can then claim the property and take legal possession if the owner does not take action to dislodge the squatter.

Different city codes invoke different rules. In some cities by living in and maintaining a house for 366 days entitles one to gain possession of the property. This can come about with absentee landlords not knowing who is actually living in a property. As a squatter though you can be evicted before 366 days.
