Make sure to get the piercing on the ear you don't sleep on if you are a side sleeper. I made this mistake and my ear eventually became so sore and infected I had to take out the earring. The piercing it self doesn't hurt any more than a regular piercing, you will be fine.

Take an anti inflammatory pill about a half an hour before the piercing such as ibuprofen. When you are getting your cartilage pierced the most important thing to do is just breath, it will be over before you know it! Once you have the piercing take some more anti inflammatory medication periodically to help minimize pain and swelling.

You can take some tylenol or advil a little bit before going to get pierced, but that's about it. It does hurt at first, but it doesn't last too long. You shouldn't use too many drugs to numb the pain, or you may end up doing more damage than good.

The amount of pain involved when getting a piercing all just depends on the person. Some people can tolerate pain more than others, there's really no way "around the pain." But you could try taking some Advil before getting it done.
