Helping anyone would be a bad idea these days, I would tell them to be careful of anyone knocking on their door for anything. There are people looking to take money from elderly people every where.

The fastest place to get things started is to talk with someone at there local police dept,as they contact other agencies that deal with this type of thing on an almost daily bases.. Contact an legal representative that deals in elder law only, you will be stunned at all the things they can do to help. .

Offering to help them, when there really offering to steal from them. Don't give anyone their social number, bank account number. Don't answer the door if you don't know the person. If repair men come to the door ask them for identification. Leave a radio on when your not at home. Don't hide money in the house.

Phone scams are rampant; they pretend to be the IRS, the person's life insurance company, or even doctors offices. Additionally, beware of overly-friendly neighbors who may be "scouting" the place for robbery.
