What are some things I should consider when designing a mudroom?

I definitely want a laundry and a bathroom off of the mudroom, but what else?

It is best to have some sort of quarry tile that can be mopped easily. Also, a bench is a good idea, so that people can sit to remove boots.

A mudroom should have easy to maintain flooring: linoleum, tile or high quality laminates are all options. Another thing to consider is where to put coats and boots, etc. A shoe cubby is a good idea. Some people prefer coat hooks for easy access. Another solution is to have a coat closet in the room.

Ensure that there are sufficient storage for seasonal outerwear, a seat for taking off boots/shoes, and a large boot/shoe tray to store we or muddy shoes.

Your mudroom should have space for muddy shoes and boots, cubbies and hooks for jackets, toys, sports equipment, a bench, and a floor that is easy to clean.

The best one I've ever seen had a big coat / glove / boot drying rack, which was super helpful when everyone came home from snowboarding.
