In small towns, everyone knows you; things are more of a family than unpersonalized. A small town with big city benefits would be a country town but with shopping, eating and dinning, and city transportation not too far from home.

Small towns with big city benefits are those located in the suburbs around those cities. You avoid the hustle and bustle of the big city, but live within a commutable distance of those big city benefits that you desire. Some examples are Montclair, NJ which is just outside of New York City, or Evanstan, IL, outside of Chicago.

I would say that some small towns with big city benefits are any number of towns located in the vicinity to big cities. In addition, towns with universities nearby or in town will usually yield big city benefits. Princeton, new jersey is an example.

Portland, Oregon is a great small town with big city benefits. With the added benefit of outdoor recreation also being readily available.
