Of course with any project it is wise to do your research and learn the correct procedures to be performed, and the tools needed for the project. Here are a few projects to think about: Laminate or tile flooring, refinishing kitchen cabinets, or new bathroom fixtures.

Keep it simple! I would say stay with painting first. Always get some good advice from a professional who can explain how to prepare your surface with proper paint/supplies.

Replace the vanity in the bathroom. Paint. Replace the doors on the kitchen cabinets. Strip woodwork if its oak. Put in new cost effective toilets. Make a to do list.

Painting a room is cheap, easy, and easily changed if you're not happy with the results. But for projects other than painting, I would recommend a good homeowner's manual, which will give you great detail on any number of projects you can try.
