First, stop at the Forest Service Ranger Station near your camping area. Besides having great educational information and the best maps, these guys have the latest reports on bear activity. Hide all your food high in trees, bearproof lockers, or secure in your trunk.

Don't store food in the tent. Clean up all food products and waste on your campsite. Make sure that all food waste is put in bear-proof storage containers provided by the campground, preferably away from the camp sites. Do not carry food with you while hiking in bear prone areas.

The very first precaution is to take notice of any signs warning about bears in the area, they will also have additional advice based on the bear population and to what to do. Typically, you would want to remain calm and play dead for as long as needed.

Carry a small gun (protection and scare-tactic), as well as a flare gun. Never go off alone. Never carry food on your person, and have a secure (locked and airtight) container for all food AND trash, even sweet smelling product(lotion). Cooking meat attracts. If confronted, jump around and make loud noises to frighten, or curl in a ball mocking dead.
