The outside linebacker has a great advantage over some of the line positions. Staring several steps back off the line of scrimage can give the advantage of momentum. Using what is called the "Bull Rush" to knock over the would be blocker. Another tactic is the "Rip"which uses your arm to rip free from a blocker.

Strength and speed train and do a lot of conditioning so that you can be explosive on every play. Square up the ball carrier and work on your tackling form.

The most important tip or thing you should be good at to be an outside linebacker, is a good tackler. Other qualities which will make you a really good one is being able to rush the quarterback, drop back in coverage and cover a receiver, and read plays for the defence.

Watch a lot of football to look at what offences do and how they do it. Outside linebacker is a reaction position on the football field. The quicker you can react the better you play the position.
