A great alternative to harsh pesticides is Diatomaceous earth; it is sharp enough to cut into soft-bodied pests, causing dehydration and death. Earthworms are not harmed. Apply in the evening, after watering and wear a mask. You can read more about it at the USDA website.

Bees are essential to pumpkin pollination, so don't kill the bees! Products such as Surround or Rotenone can be used for striped and cucumber beetles and vine borers when they start to feast on the pumpkins. Sprinkle Sevin Dust on plant area and use Capture to eliminate squash bugs.

Using insecticides when there is no infestation will not protect your pumpkins. The reason is because you will end up killing beneficial organisims. These poisons are useful to try to fix a problem aggressivly. Normally you don't want to be rough.

A natural approach to protecting your pumpkins from insects, is to use soap. Diluting dishwashing liquid such as Ivory with water will make a natural insecticide for your vegetable garden to ensure that your family is protected from any harsh chemicals from store bought insecticides. It is also environment friendly.
