Attachment theory owes its scholarly origins to a psychologist named Bowlby who related attachment to loss. Another important line of research is from another psychologist, Dr. Mary Ainsworth at the University of Virginia. She identified three distinct types of stranger anxiety seen in infants on separation from their mothers.

The theory itself relates to the process of how we as human beings form our most earliest attachments but more specifically, how the nature and quality of those fundational attachments serve as a template for the kinds of bonds with people made throughout one's whole life.
