Make sure to buy more materials than you think you will actually need that way you have extra if you miscalculated. Pick soft, neutral colors so the bathroom meets everyone's taste and you will not have to repaint or re-tile it if you sale it in the future.

Make sure that the bath is properly set in place. There is nothing worse than having to constantly reseal around the edges of the bath and wall because it keeps pulling away!

Make sure your contractor is willing to provide a solid, reasonable schedule with goals. You can be assured that the actual job will take longer and cost more, but having a schedule and goals to refer to will help reduce the stress in the process.

Some things you may want to do when you redo your bathroom is to make sure you have enough tiles if you are planning on tiling the bathroom floor. Also you can use plenty of blue tape when painting so you can make sure that there are no mistakes when painting.

Firstly, make sure you know what you're doing! If you hire someone to do it, make sure they know what they're doing!
