What are some great training ideas for someone who is in the off season of track and field?

Change it up and do something different. Take yoga classes, or try Pilates classes, there all types of variations on the basics. Lift weights and get in plenty of stretching.

Try going out for a run during the off season. There are a lot of lakes and parks that have scenic trails around them where you can go for a run. Take your dog or take a friend. It will help you keep up your endurance.

Running at an indoor track is best. But if that is not an option, running up and down stairs would be the next best choice. This has the benefit of being free, strengthening your leg muscles, and increasing your aerobic capacity. Running up stairs a few flights gives an excellent workout.

You really want to give your primary running muscles some time off. COnsider swimming and games like volleyball to give your body a change but still keep you active.

Doing some shorter distance races like the 5k or 10k will keep your lungs in shape and are a fun thing to do to for training. Swimming laps is also good training to do on your time off because it is not strenuous on your knee joints.
