My mother is a cosmetologist, and I worked in a hair salon for 3 years--chain salons like Mario Tricoci, Regis, etc, no matter what their reputation, are usually over-priced and don't do a job worth the money. Go local and unique with a stylist you can get personal with.

Great hair salons vary widely by the region you are in. Overall, Aveda salons tend to be great and use excellent products. You can find a good salon by asking friends.
