Have the kids find simple items in very simple places, IE don't bury the object or put them too high. Spread out the area but make sure the kids don't get lost. Use simple items like a rubber duck, crayons, and stuff you want to let the kids keep when they find them.

A great scavenger hunt for children is to write a small list for the children at camp that has them find things around the camp that are easy for a 2nd grader to find. A few examples would be something like a leaf from a tree, a gray stone, a flower, etc.

Hiding a compass would be a great learning tool for this age group. Not only could they find it but the chance to teach it would be available.

'ABC' scavenger hunts would be appropriate for 7 year olds. For example, for 'A', the scavengers could retrieve an apple; for 'B' a bagel' for 'C' a clover. However, some items may need to be planted like 'Q' queen or 'X' x-ray.
