Akira Kurosawa also did a movie named Rashomon in 1950. This is considered by many to be the best Japanese movie of all time. Other great Japanese films are Seven Samurai and Tokyo Story. Seven Samurai, of course, influenced the western The Magnificent Seven in the United States. It is basically a remake in the west.

My brother's are fans of Japanese filmography and they have a pretty good collection of good Japanese films. I myself have only seen one Japanese film from their collection as they recommended that I watch it. It is called Akira. It's a 1988 anime film (animated). I don't normally like Japanese animation, but I really liked Akira.

possibly the best is Akira Kurosawa's Film "Seven Samurai", which was the basis for the American western "The Magnificent Seven". Most of Kurosawa;s films are great. There were also many great sci-fi and monster movies made in japan in the 60's and 70's.

Some good Japanese films are by Hayao Miyazaki: one of his more prominent films is NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind; also see his other notable film Spirited Away (which won the 2003 Oscar for Best Animation Feature). Another great Japanese film - The Twilight Samurai - was nominatd for best foreign feature and won several Japanese "Oscars."
