What are some good "Battleship" strategy tips?

Create patterns across the board that will effectively hit all areas to try and make contact. Beware of players who hide ships along the borders of the board. A good overall strategy is to keep all of your guesses at least 3 spaces apart from each other in all directions.

When I play battleship I love to put 2 ships on the top row and 2 ships on the bottom row and one in the middle going vertically. This seems to work especially online when I play this game I win alot with this strategy.
