There are a few eating disorders. Most of the time, the person feels that their body is not good enough for society and therefore will either starve themselves, which is called anorexia nervousa and some will binge eat and vomit, which is called buliemia. The other disorder is also over eating and feeling that the food comforts you.

Not eating around other people, very defensive of weight, refuses to answer questions about eating habits, often cold and tired, wearing baggy or dark clothing, not participating in many activities, more exercise than is considered normal.

You are a great friend for being concerned. Possible signs of an eating disorder include preoccupation with food, apparent dislike with body image, frequent visits to the restroom especially after eating, rapid weight gain or loss and change in personality.

Anorexia is where someone eats very little and is afraid of gaining weight. Sometimes, they use laxatives and exercise excessively. Bulimia is a condition where someone will binge eat (large amounts of food) and then vomit afterwards. In Binge Eating Disorder (currently not recognized by the APA, but is used commonly by people)someone will eat large quantities of food.

If they don't eat at all, if they eat to an extreme amount, and then they throw the food back up are the two most commom forms of eating disorders (anorexia and bulemia). Both are very serious (both mentally and physically) and professional treatment should be sought for either.
