What are some common rib cage abnormalities?

My toddlers ribs stick out more than others do and I want to be sure there is nothing wrong.

Some people are built so that the bottom of the rib cage is wide. It's normal. Starlets have been known to have the bottom ribs removed to reduce their girth.

Pectus excavatum or pectus carnatum are common and could easily be diagnosied by a doctor. Rickets is very rare, but also has a distinct rib cage abnormality. See the doctor.

Well if your toddler has a pigeon chest or if there is some abnormality in where the nipples are located then there is reason for a concern. But check with your doctor to be sure.

Common rib abnormalities include: pectus excavatum, which is a sunken chest, pectus carinatum, which is often called pigeon chest. Another abnormality is Bifid or bifurcated ribs in which the sternal end of the rib is fused into two.

It is likely that your child simply has a wide rib cage or prominent lower ribs; both are common. Talk to your pediatrician for reassurance.
