What are some bulimia facts?

It is a mental disorder that can lead to decreased bone mineral density and premature osteoporosis, amenorrhea leading to infertility, electrolyte imbalances, decreased immune function, diminished ability of the body to heal wounds, GI dysfunction, disorders or cancer of the esophagus or mouth, tooth decay and infection, place every body system at risk of severe dysfunction and death.

Potential bulimia complications include heart failure, irregular heart beat, amenorrhea, tooth decay, chronic constipation, digestive disturbances, inflammation or tears of the esophagus, hemorrhoids, dehydration, pancreatitis, and death.

Many people die of untreated bulimia every year. Bulimia can cause tooth erosion, hair loss, stomach rupture, irregular heartbeat and severe malnutrition. Bulimia is very hard to treat with most patients having to be treated in a hospital-like setting. Bulimia can be successfully treated. Ay one time mostly teen girls got the disease. Now it's found in teen boys too.

The endless vomiting is extremely corrosive to the teeth. It is not uncommon for women with bulimia to first be reported by their dentists or have dentures at 30.
