Signs of canine newborn distress are mainly obvious when the puppy is not suckling well from the mother or refuses to eat all together. Puppies are naturally sleepy to begin with, but if the puppy does not act as energetic as the others or is acting different it could be a sign of distress.

Healthy puppies should feel full and firmly packed, be mostly quiet, busy nursing or sleeping, fussing only if lost from mom or needing to be cleaned by her to potty. Pups in distress are noisy, may move around a lot, don't nurse, can feel chilled or stiff, and feel slack when picked up instead of like an overpacked sausage.

Stress in small puppies can activate Canine Herpes and other deadly symptoms in puppies. You need to determine if the puppy is acting healthy. See if the puppy is nursing properly or if it's not waking up to eat and doesn't seem active enough. Take the puppy to the vet.

When the mother has it she will lick the puppy vigorously if the puppy doesn't seem to respond or doesn't start to make noise I would consider that a sign.

I am not sure what you mean by Newborn Distress. However, if your newborn puppy is showing any kind of troubling actions like excessive shaking or not moving you should immediately see a vet.

Your pup will either be very feverish, or very cold. It'll be listless, and unable or unwilling to suckle. If you already have a weaned puppy, this isn't an issue.

Having brought several litters of puppies into the world I have yet to deal with canine newborn distress. The best possible thing for a newborn is to nurse. When a puppy is born, check it is breathing and then move it to mother's teat. When in doubt, call your vet.

A newborn puppy should be have pink lips and gums. If the puppy is pale, breathing heavy or not suckling, it should be seen by a vet. Puppies typically eat every hours and sleep in between. The mother should be constantly cleaning and feeding the puppies. If she does not accepyt the puppies, they need to be bottle fed.
