There are 4 possible reasons: your body is fighting an infection, some drugs can enhance white cell counts, a disease of the bone marrow or an immune system disorder.

A high white blood count can mean an infection or a blood disorder such as leukemia. Your doctor can shed light on this matter and there is danger in self diagnosis. A high white blood count without treatment means whatever is causing the count has a chance to grow. These white cells are part of your immune system.

Normally it means that you're fighting off an infection. Its normally not anything to be too worried about since the body can fight off bacteria without making you ill (side effect of fighting infection*) most of the time. White blood cells basically just eat away harmful things in your system.

A high white blood count itself isn't a disease but there could be an underlying problem. Too much smoking can raise the white cells or an infection somewhere in the body . Other causes could be severe physical or emotional stress, inflammation, acute or chronic leukemia, or allergies to name a few. A doctor will evaluate further.

The most common cause is and internal infection. Usually if the body is trying to fight off some form of infection one of the first things that will happen is the white cell will shoot up as to how high it goes depends on the infection.

Elevated white cell count commonly indicates an infective pathology. A simple upper respiratory infection or an urinary infection will result in raised counts. Grossly elevated counts could be due to severe infection[sepsis] and rarely could be a form of blood cancer-Leukemia,Lymphoma etc. depending on the subtype of predominant white blood cell.
