When a person dies, his/her estate is handled through Probate Court. The court appoints someone to oversee the estate, collect information about debts and assets, and to see that indebtedness is resolved before the releasing proceeds to heirs. Your "rights" depend on your relationship to the deceased and whether you are named in the will, if there is one.

You have the right to a copy of the will. If there is an executor and they state that the estate has incurred expenses decreasing how much money is distributed, you can require a full accounting of those expenses and see the estate tax return. You can demand a list of who received what from the will.

Your have certain rights regardless whether you are in court. What actions you can take in court depend on why you are in court. Probate court hears several kinds of cases, so depending on the purpose of your appearance, requests would differ as appropriate. The matters that go to probate court vary from one jurisdiction to another.
