You must have sandy soil that is well drained and also you will have a problem with pests with this species of tomato.

In order to successfully grow this tomato, sandy soil is needed as well as insect control. This variety of tomato is notorious for pests so controlling them is key. History of this variety is that it thrived in an acidic soil so you may need to check the PH level.

San Marzano tomatoes were originally grown in the foothills under Vesuvius. The soil there is very acidic due to the volcanic ash in the soil. Perhaps you need to check the pH level of your growing dirt?

For San Marzano tomatoes, be sure you are using stakes to hold them up, they are longer vined. Also, if you are over 95 degrees, they need a little shade.

The San Marzano tomato needs long days and hotter weather. In zones where there is abundant sun but not hot enough, like the Northwest are of Washington, the tomatoes don't get enough heat to ripen. Lots of tomatoes will grow but they will keep growing and not ripen because the weather isn't hot enough.

More than a lot of varieties, the San Marzano needs a longer growing season, and it requires a good drained soil. Black plastic at the base my help greatly, as it keeps warmth in. The San Marzano like to grow UP, so you may need to experiment with bamboo stakes or caging. This tomato is a heritage and requires nurturing.

San marzano tomatoes can be difficult to grow so that they achieve the flavor you desire from this type of tomato. Make sure that you plant them in healthy soil where they will recieve full sunlight during the day. Maintain your plants and soil be feeding/fertilizing the soil once a month with a tomato plant food.
