Cat6 is a computer lan data cable that supports gigabit ethernet, so if your home theater setup includes internet connected and/or home networked devices in it that aren't wireless then you will most likely require one. If there are no internet/networked devices in your setup then the cable isn't really needed.

CAT 6 cables can be found on amazon for as low as $7 dollars for a 50ft cable. They are very nice to use for home theater as they are flawless and also give high quality resolution.

You can either use CAT5 or CAT6 cables for a home theater. Both should work about equally well for that purpose.
