It makes more sense for you to buy the shoes. You'll want to get a pair that really fits him and that works with his feet. If the team provided them they may not be good for him personally.

Basketball shoes are very expensive. Sometimes schools and basketball teams cannot afford to pay for everyones shoes. Usually most teams that I know have fundraisers to help the players pay for the expensive basketball shoes that they need to compete. Sometimes even after the fundraiser the total amount is not covered so you may have to pay for that portion.
